Wee: Third account for headmasters does not exist

JOHOR BARU: There is no such thing as a third account for headmasters of Chinese schools, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dismissing claims by the Chinese Schools Parents Association of a fund for school heads, Dr Wee said Chinese schools had two accounts — government-aided fund and public donation.

“The funds from government allocation goes towards administrative cost and buying school equipment. The public donation account is used for building school amenities such as the canteen.

“No special account exists for head­­­masters or principals of Chinese schools,” Dr Wee said after visiting the Love Foundation Home for Han­dicapped children here yesterday.

He said Chinese schools were audited by the Ministry’s internal audit and the Auditor-General’s department.

Dr Wee was responding to a claim by the association in a Chinese daily which said that such a fund could lead to swindling or misappropriation.

He advised the association to provide proof to substantiate its claim.

Dr Wee announced that the Bachelor of Teaching Degree Programme is expected to be accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency on Jan 24, enabling more than 2,000 teachers from the programme to start work after the Chinese New Year school holidays.

“The teachers will be posted to schools as trained temporary teachers by Feb 7,” he said.

He said Education Service Commission would interview them before offering them full time teaching positions.

The United Chinese School Teachers Association (Jiao Zong) had reported­ly called on the ministry and the relevant agencies to hasten the process of teacher placement in schools.
